This past Saturday I had my first day of volunteering at a local hospital providing Healing Touch therapy.  From the website, here is a brief description of Healing Touch:

“What is Healing Touch?

Healing Touch is an energy therapy in which practitioners consciously use their hands in a heart-centered and intentional way to support and facilitate physical, emotional, mental and spiritual health.

Healing Touch is a biofield (magnetic field around the body) therapy that is an energy-based approach to health and healing.

Healing Touch uses the gift of touch to influence the human energy system, specifically the energy field that surrounds the body, and the energy centers that control the flow from the energy field to the physical body.

These non-invasive techniques employ the hands to clear, energize, and balance the human and environmental energy fields, thus affecting physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health. It is based on a heart-centered, caring relationship in which the practitioner and client come together energetically to facilitate the client’s health and healing.

The goal of Healing Touch is to restore balance and harmonies in the energy system, placing the client in a position to self heal.”

I had the privilege of providing healing touch to patients varying from hospice to oncology to those being discharged that day.  The change in the patient’s demeanor was remarkable.  Those that were in pain or anxious just melted into a deep state of relaxation.  Some even fell asleep! When that happened we would try to sneak out of the room so as not to wake them.  I had never been part of something so transformative for another human being.  It was magical.

This brings me to this past Tuesday in Yoga Teacher/Holistic Coaching class.  As usual the class was filled with sharing, laughing and community.  After class I was talking to my fellow classmate and “buddhi”, I will call her S, and she said, “give me a hug” and I did.  Now it was my turn to be transformed.  It was so spontaneous and genuine it instantly amped the effect of the class up a few notches and put a smile in my heart.

If you have someone dear nearby–family, friends, pets–reach out and touch them.  Heck, give them a hug.  A simple act that can transform not only the recipient but you as well.
