Wednesday night I had the pleasure of going to my first ever clothing swap.  Members of Girls Pint Out-Cincinnati brought their gently used clothing to give others the opportunity to pick up a few items.  That was great–who doesn’t like free stuff?  But what made it even better?  The fact that all the leftover clothing and accessories were going to be donated to a charity called Dress for Success.  Their mission is “…to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and the development tools to help women thrive in work and in life” (www.dressforsuccess.org).  While it was fun to get together with friends, have a beer, and sort through the items looking for a gem, the real benefit to me comes with knowing we greatly helped some women in need.

This weekend I will also have the opportunity to volunteer at an event for Mike “Big Cis” Cisneros, a man instrumental in a podcast about the beer community.   When Mike passed away unexpectedly, the brewing community that knew him so well decided to come together to honor him.  The event includes the release of a beer brewed in his name, along with raffles and prizes raising money for the Boy Scouts of America and the Reds Community Fund.

‘Tis the season, my friends.  The season of giving.  We will be asked to give food, so those less fortunate can eat on Thanksgiving.  We will be asked to donate coats, so those less fortunate can keep warm.  We will be asked to donate toys so those less fortunate can enjoy the smile on their child’s face on Christmas morning.  We may even be asked to donate our time to collect the above items, or for other things such as our church events or our employer’s charity works.  I say bring it on.   Of course the biggest benefit of volunteering is helping others, but the kicker is YOU can benefit too.  See the infographic (love ’em) below for some interesting stats.

‘Tis the season to give–so please consider donating your time, money or talent to those that need it most.  And maybe it will become less of a season and happen on a continuous basis.  Can you imagine the beauty of that?
